The program for gifted services at the middle school
level combines the features of the resource model and the cluster
model. By utilizing features of each design, VBCPS "clusters"
the identified intellectually gifted students into 1-2 core teams
at each grade level. Cluster cores as they are called, work
regularly with the GRT to differentiate for the needs of the gifted.
The clustering of the gifted ensures that these students have the
opportunity to spend at least part of their school day with their
intellectual peers, promotes self-esteem, productivity, creativity,
and seeks to help students reach their full potential. The presence
of the GRT in planning and implementation of lessons, activities,
and units assists our classroom teachers in meeting the needs of the
gifted population. This
year's goals for the Salem Middle School Gifted Program focus on
assisting teachers in the implementation of differentiated instruction
and building depth and complexity into the curriculum.

·Monthly staff development offerings
